Expedition 2028 - planning stage

The central idea of the Alai-Pamir Expedition 2028 is to follow up the scientific and mountaineering activities in the Pamir involving German climbers and scientists in the past, and above all to promote international cooperation with people from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The hundredth anniversary of the Alai-Pamir Expedition of 1928 would be an excellent occasion for this.

Arrivals from Germany can be made by plane to the southern Kyrgyz city of Osh (international airport with the abbreviation OSS). From there to the expedition area it is about 200 km, which, despite possibly still poor road conditions in some sections, can be covered in one day.

The expedition should maintain a central base camp in the summer of 2028 (June/July to September), from which the individual research or mountaineering teams can be transported to their respective work or expedition areas and from which the necessary logistical support can also be ensured.

For the operation of this central base camp, one or more local companies should be engaged that are already active in mountaineering tourism and therefore possess the equipment required to provide logistical support for such high-altitude expeditions.
As in the previously mentioned expeditions of 1913 and especially 1928, collaboration with scientists from the country or countries to be visited should play a central role. In 1928, this was the Soviet Union. Central Asia is no longer part of Russia. Today, the expedition area belongs to Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, where are the opportunities to conduct scientific work much more difficult and limited compared to Germany or European countries. In this respect, such an expedition and the following analysis of its results could become a starting point for further international cooperation for Kyrgyz and Tajik scientists.
